“Dipak, do did you give Avanti’s boarding school issue further consideration?”
“I did, I see you point, going to boarding school will definitely benefit her, she will become tougher emotionally, she will learn to do things on her own and she will come out of her shell and make new friends. I don’t think she has gotten over my divorce with her mother yet.”
“I know it is tough for kids, and especially teenage girls go through so much emotional and physical changes that it gets a bit overwhelming for them. I am glad you see it my way, so when will you talk to her about boarding school?”
“Well that is the problem Sonali, you know she is having a hard time accepting that her mother and I have divorced, she has not come to terms with reality, she has not accepted you and between you and me she does not think highly of you”
“Oh Darling that is normal. I see her as my daughter and in given time she will accept me too, don’t worry about what she says about me, it is her welfare that I want right now”
“I am so glad to have found you, not many women would be this understanding. See this is where my problem lies, we are planning to get married next month, if we send her to boarding school she will assume that you were after this and she will hate you for the rest of her life.”
“I never looked at it from that angle”
“Maybe we should wait a year”
“I suppose we can do that but honey we are starting a new life, we need some privacy as well, besides if she does not leave now she will get even more reserved and God forbid if her grades suffer she will not get admission anywhere.
Let me ask you something, are you checking up on her from time to time?”
“What do you mean?”
“Well teenagers do crazy things, if you catch her in the act you can use that as an excuse to send her away, that way she will not hate me and six months in a all girls boarding school she will realize your intentions”
“I don’t think spying on her is a good thing”
“Honey you are doing this for her good, if she is getting mixed with the wrong crowd, would you rather know now or later? A father’s job is not easy but he has to do what it takes to protect his daughter”
“Why is it that I always get you”
“Because we love each other……is Avanti home?”
“No, she is at her friend’s house, why?”
“Nothing, I thought I heard someone upstairs”
“Must be the cats”
Dipak starts going through Avanti’s stuff and learns a lot about her, she is in denial about the divorce, in her mind she has cooked up a story that Sonali is after their money, she loves a boy from her class Matt, she has smoked a cigarette a couple of times, she has even tried alcohol.
Dipak was going to Avanti’s dairy as evidence, he was determined to face her with the dairy and then as a punishment send her to boarding school. Avanti was going to the library with her friend Bina and was going to spend the night at her house. He went to her room and read the latest entry in her dairy and he was shocked.
“May 12th : I am soooo happy,,,,,,like Matt has asked me out again and tonight we are going to Sunset Point……OMG tat is the best spot in town to make out, he asked me to bring protection. I told my lame Dad that I am spending the night at Bina’s, the jerk he is probably happy to have the whole house with the witch Sonali.”
Diapk called Sonali but her phone was turned off, he remembered that she was at someone’s house for bhajans, he had to act fast, he jumped in the car and went to Sunset Point.
He returned home, Avanti was on the couch watching TV and eating popcorn, he felt bad, he went to her and said
“Avanti, I have broken up with Sonali. I found her kissing Sujay – yes the same Sujay she claimed to be her cousin. They confessed that they are con artists out to get wealthy divorced and widowed men like myself.
Look I am sorry about the divorce but your mother and I were not happy together, I hope you understand that this is for the best.
Also, I have a confession to make, I have been reading your diary regularly, I hope you can forgive me for that and I am proud of you for not going to on a another date with Matt. I went to Sunset Point hoping to catch you in the act”
Avanti smiled “I will forgive you if you forgive me for leading you on. Dad I was home when I heard you talk to Sonali about me, I knew that you would believe me only if I can prove to you that she is not the right one for you so I started writing all those things.. I heard her talk to someone about meeting at Sunset Point and I put that down in my dairy hoping that you would go there”
Father and daughter hugged each other.
